I was not familiar with Esperanza Spalding's music before the WSJ asked me to do her portrait this week, so it was a treat to discover her; if you're not acquainted with her work, I recommend you change that, pronto. I sent in her portrait with these two different color interpretations; the Journal chose the cool jazz palette at bottom. I choose the hot one at top.
